Dated May 30, 1923, this view shows a parade of the Grand Army of the Republic, the Union Civil War veterans' organization whose members traditionally marched on Decoration Day, the holiday now called Memorial Day, which fell on that date. By the 1920s the surviving veterans were growing few and old, so their processions had become some of the last public gatherings of men who had fought in the 1860s. The picture comes from a glass negative made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio known for recording Washington life in the early twentieth century, and the plate shows the streaks and blemishes that often appear as the original coatings deteriorate.
