A full-length etched portrait of an unnamed woman, shown standing and head to foot, is a format that was popular for printmakers to show a sitter's dress, pose and surroundings as well as her face. The record gives no date or sitter name, so the print's exact origin is uncertain. Etchings of this kind were typically made by drawing into a metal plate with a needle and then biting the lines with acid, which allowed a single image to be printed many times. Look closely at the fabric folds and the hand placement, since these details often reveal the fashion and status the artist wanted to convey.
