The pairing named here is most likely Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, the dancers who built one of the most influential partnerships in early American modern dance. The Bain News Service, a New York press photography agency, recorded many stage performers of the 1910s, and the title comes from the agency's own caption, which has not been independently verified. St. Denis and Shawn married in 1914 and opened the Denishawn school in Los Angeles in 1915, where students including Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey trained. Their work drew on Asian, Egyptian and other non-Western movement sources, which was unusual for the stage at the time.
