Captioned simply as the Honorable J.W. Fortescue and his wife, this glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, the New York press photo agency run by George Grantham Bain in the early twentieth century. Bain's photographers supplied newspapers with portraits of public figures, visitors and society people, so the collection is rich in such sitters. The title was recorded by the agency and has not been independently verified, and no date survives, leaving the occasion uncertain. It remains a useful example of how news studios presented notable couples to a public eager for images of people in the news.
