Among the earliest surviving examples of Houdini's own handwriting, this 1886 postcard was written by Ehrich Weiss, the name he was born with, to his mother. He was twelve and had run away from home to earn money and ease his family's grinding poverty. The Library of Congress holds it as the earliest sample of Houdini's handwriting in its collections, and a later typed commentary by the magician accompanies it. Together the two documents offer a rare look at the boy behind the famous escape artist.
