Its title pairs a game of billiards with a kiss, so the scene reads less as a study of the sport than as a flirtation staged around the table. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued this lithograph in 1874, built much of its business on inexpensive genre scenes of everyday American life, and billiards was a popular pastime in both private parlors and public halls at the time. Prints like this were meant to be taken in quickly and shared at home. The firm's 1870s output is documented in the Gale Research catalog raisonné, which lists this print as number 0585.
