Rather than a place, this print names two national figures: Grover Cleveland, the Democratic president seeking reelection, and Allen G. Thurman, the Ohio senator who was his running mate in 1888. Its title points to tariff reform, the issue Cleveland had pushed to the center of his agenda in his December 1887 message to Congress and that sharply divided the parties that year. The print is dated September 17, 1888, within the final weeks of a campaign dominated by the tariff. The maker names in the record are marked as unverified, so the artist is best treated as uncertain.
