Here the national figure is Brother Jonathan, the lanky personification of the United States that preceded Uncle Sam in popular prints, shown striding through a century of progress. The print ties that stride to the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, which opened in Fairmount Park that May to mark 100 years since the Declaration of Independence. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued thousands of inexpensive lithographs for a mass audience, produced such allegorical pieces to celebrate the anniversary and to reflect the country's pride in its industry and growth.
