Two Army blimps, the T.C. 5 and T.C. 9, drift past the Washington Monument's white obelisk in this view of a practice flight out of Langley Field, Virginia. The airships were small nonrigid craft, and their flights over the capital in the 1920s show the Army testing lighter-than-air aircraft as they moved toward wider use. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, recorded many views of the city's landmarks in this period, so the picture pairs a modern machine with a monument finished in 1884, a contrast of new and old that gave the photograph its appeal.
