The title on this glass negative pairs Herbert Hoover with a second name, Denham, but the National Photo Company's label is unverified, so the identity of the other man remains uncertain. Hoover served as secretary of commerce in the 1920s and became president in 1929, and Washington studios of that era regularly photographed officials of his rank. The National Photo Company worked in the capital, recording officials, visitors and public occasions on glass plates from roughly 1910 to 1935. Viewers should also notice the streaks and blemishes caused by deterioration of the original coating, which are part of the negative's physical history.
