Dated June 10, 1924, this glass negative is tied to a specific day, and its title pairs Herbert Hoover with Charles Evans Hughes, who was then Secretary of State. That title comes from the National Photo Company's notation on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. Hoover was serving as Secretary of Commerce that year, and June 10 was the opening day of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, which may help explain the occasion. Look closely at the plate itself, where streaks and small blemishes reflect the natural deterioration of the original coatings, a common trait of glass negatives from this era.
