The title pairs Herbert Hoover with King Tut, though that label was written on the negative and has not been independently confirmed. The pairing fits its era: Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered in Egypt in 1922, sparking a wave of American fascination with ancient Egypt, and Hoover was then serving as Secretary of Commerce. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio whose glass negatives document public figures and events of the 1910s and 1920s. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the gradual deterioration of its original coating.
