Few details survive about the sitter of this 1844 daguerreotype beyond what the plate itself shows: a man in a dark jacket and a knotted cravat, posed for the camera at a time when the process was barely five years old. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, each one a unique positive image that could not be duplicated, and sitters often had to hold still for minutes in bright light. Portraits from this early period are valued both as personal records and as evidence of how quickly photography moved from novelty to everyday practice in the 1840s.
