The record names only the sitter, Julius P. Meyer, and the title comes from caption data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card, which has not been independently verified. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York around 1899, and it supplied photographs of people and news events to newspapers for roughly two decades. Its glass negatives, like this one, were the standard working format of that period, before flexible film became common. Because the date is unknown, the picture is best understood as a record of the agency's practice of photographing people in their time.
