The record names this sitter only as Mrs. Howard Elliott, and the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from caption cards that Bain News Service itself marked as unverified, so the identity should be read with some caution. Her husband, Howard Elliott, was a prominent railroad executive in the early twentieth century. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers from about 1900 into the 1920s. Its small format and fragile glass plate reflect the fast, practical portrait work the agency relied on.
