Washington, D.C., around 1865 was a federal city reshaped by four years of war. Soldiers, government clerks, and freedpeople and refugees had swelled its population well beyond the modest capital Pierre L'Enfant had laid out, and army hospitals, camps, and forts ringed the surrounding hills. The Capitol was still under construction, its new cast-iron dome rising over the city as a sign that the Union meant to finish what the war had interrupted. In April, the city mourned Abraham Lincoln, who died across from Ford's theater after being shot there, and residents followed the funeral and the slow train journey that carried his body home to Illinois.
