The title's "Dexter's best time of 2:16 1/4" refers to a mile trotted in harness, the kind of record that made Dexter one of the most celebrated trotting horses of the 1860s. Robert Bonner, publisher of the *New York Ledger*, owned the horse and promoted him heavily, so prints like this one also served as advertising for the animal and for harness racing. The record gives no date, and the name Joseph Hoover on the shelflist card is unverified, so the exact year of printing is uncertain. Sporting images like this were popular in the period as souvenirs for owners, drivers, and track fans.
