A Coast Guard photographer recorded a captive balloon hoisting a wire antenna for the Voice of America, with the caption card linking the scene to the USS Courier. Barrage balloons, tethered to deter low-flying aircraft in wartime, were put to a radio use here, lifting the antenna high above the deck. The Voice of America had been broadcasting overseas since 1942, and higher wires could help its shortwave signal travel farther. Details of this March 1952 setting come from an unverified caption card, so the exact operation remains open to question.
