A tethered balloon rises above a Voice of America antenna in this 1952 photoprint from the U.S. Coast Guard, taken over March 7-8. Voice of America had grown out of wartime shortwave broadcasting and was sending programs overseas by the early 1950s, and its signals depended on tall antennas. Balloons offered a practical way to lift such wires aloft, so the picture pairs a lighter-than-air craft with a radio installation. The date and photographer come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
