A tethered balloon lifts a wire antenna for the Voice of America in this Coast Guard photoprint from early March 1952. The caption card links the scene to the USS Courier and to barrage balloons, the large airships developed for air defense in World War II and later used for other tasks. The Voice of America, the U.S. government's international shortwave broadcaster, had been on the air since 1942, and a high antenna could help its signal carry over long distances. The record notes that these details come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the exact location and purpose should be treated as tentative.
