*Prarie Crabapple* is a fruit crate label, the kind pasted onto wooden boxes so buyers could tell one grower's fruit from another's. Crabapples are small, tart apples prized for cider, jelly and preserves as much as for eating raw, so a label naming the variety suggests fruit bound for the kitchen. Color lithography made labels like this common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when orchards shipped fruit by rail to distant markets. The bright, stylized artwork was meant to stand out on crowded grocers' shelves.
