The Rabun apple shown here appears both whole and cut in half, so the plate records its exterior color and its interior structure in one view. The variety takes its name from Rabun County in the mountains of northeast Georgia, and it was one of many regional apples that growers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture documented in the early twentieth century. Plates like this one, from the 1906 Yearbook, were meant to help farmers, nurserymen and buyers identify varieties accurately, when naming and appearance varied widely from one region to the next.
