This engraving shows a horse on its hind legs, and its record places it as a plate facing page 452 of a printed book, which suggests it was meant to be read alongside the text rather than hung on its own. The date given is 1678, a period when illustrated books on horsemanship and natural history were popular with European readers. Rearing was a central movement in the classical riding taught at academies of the time, so such images often served as models for students and as displays of a rider's skill. Plates like this one were usually cut by hand into copper, which gives the lines their fine, controlled character.
