Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1888 was a resort town built around its thermal springs in the Ouachita Mountains, and its economy rested largely on visitors who came to bathe in the waters for rheumatism, skin complaints, and general ailments. The federal government had set aside the springs as a reservation in 1832, and by the late 1880s bathhouses lined Central Avenue, with hotels and boarding houses rising on the slopes above. Railroad lines brought steady streams of invalids and vacationers from St. Louis, Memphis, and Little Rock, and the town's population swelled each season. Residents knew Hot Springs as a health resort first, a place where the bathing trade, not farming or manufacturing, set the rhythm of daily life.
