Little Rock, the Arkansas state capital, sat on a rocky bluff above the Arkansas River in 1887, and the town had grown quickly since the first railroad reached it in the 1870s. The Iron Mountain line's bridge across the river linked the city to lines running north and east, and cotton, lumber and timber moved out through its wharves and freight yards. Merchants, lawyers and state officials filled the downtown blocks around the old State House, while churches, schools and new houses spread into the surrounding neighborhoods. Residents would have known Little Rock as the commercial center of a farming and timber region, a place where the legislature met and where river trade still mattered.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Little Rock, Arkansas, drawn in 1887. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
