Van Buren, Arkansas, in 1888 was a river town in the Ozark foothills, set on the north bank of the Arkansas River directly across from Fort Smith and serving as the seat of Crawford County. Its fortunes rested on steamboat traffic, wagon freight carrying farm produce and timber, and the trade flowing between the Indian Territory frontier and the settled Arkansas interior. Fort Smith's federal court, presided over by Judge Isaac Parker, drew lawmen, witnesses and spectators across the water, filling Van Buren's hotels and stores with business. A map drawn that year would have shown a town still organized around its riverfront, courthouse square and churches.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Van Buren, Arkansas, drawn in 1888. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
