Lakeport, the county seat of Lake County, sat on the western shore of Clear Lake in northern California in 1888. The town's economy rested on farming and orchards in the surrounding valleys, on the lake's steamboat traffic that carried passengers and freight along its shores, and on mining in the hills, where quicksilver (mercury) was the county's best-known product. Lakeport was also a destination for visitors who came for the lake's fishing, boating, and mineral hot springs. Residents of the day knew the town mainly as the seat of county government and as the commercial center for the lake country, a role it still holds.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Lakeport, California, drawn in 1888. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
