Eureka, California, in 1902 was the county seat of Humboldt County and the main town on Humboldt Bay, on the North Coast about 270 miles north of San Francisco. Its economy rested on redwood. Sawmills along the bay turned old-growth timber into lumber, and schooners and steamers carried it south to San Francisco and beyond, so the waterfront and mill district were the town's working heart. Fishing, dairying, and farming in the surrounding valleys added to the trade that passed through the port. Residents of the day knew Eureka as a lumber port at the edge of a vast, thinly settled coast, a town whose fortunes rose and fell with the cutting of the redwood forests.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Eureka, California, drawn in 1902. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders. |
