Healdsburg in 1876 was a young farm town where Dry Creek meets the Russian River in northern Sonoma County, laid out around a central plaza only about two decades earlier. Its economy rested on wheat, hops, orchards, and the vineyards spreading across the surrounding valleys. Milling and lumber along the river, along with wagon traffic to the landings, tied the town to the wider county. By the mid-1870s the railroad linked Healdsburg with San Francisco and points north, making it easier to ship crops to market, and local merchants and churches supported a steady community of farming families.
