The name on this glass negative, Nephile Bunnell, comes from a caption card or the negative itself, and the Library of Congress has not verified it, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its 5 by 7 inch or smaller glass plates were a common format of that era, and they show the fast, practical work of press photographers before halftone printing became routine in newspapers.
