The portrait is catalogued under the name Ruth McDonald, a title the Library of Congress notes is unverified and was taken from caption cards or the negative itself by the Bain News Service. It is one of the glass negatives in the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of work built by a news photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in New York from the early 1900s into the 1920s. Bain's studio sent photographers out to events, streets and public figures, and the resulting negatives were filed by subject for quick sale to editors. Because the record gives no date and no further identification, the sitter's identity and the occasion remain uncertain, but the glass plate format itself points to the early twentieth century.
