The title places these French army aviators at Mineola, a Long Island village whose Hempstead Plains fields hosted some of the earliest American flying exhibitions and, later, military aviation activity. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and its caption cards are the source of the title, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified. Pictures like this one, showing foreign airmen on American soil, record the close exchange of flying know-how between Europe and the United States during the years when aviation was moving from novelty to military tool.
