Caption information for this glass negative from the Bain News Service identifies its subject as a Japanese army aviation graduate, though the record gives no date and the title is unverified. Japanese military flight training expanded in the early twentieth century, when the army trained its own pilots at airfields near Tokorozawa, outside Tokyo, and graduation marked a young officer's entry into a rapidly growing air arm. The Bain agency, based in New York during these same decades, supplied photographs of foreign events and personalities to American newspapers, so pictures like this one reached readers far from the training grounds.
