Photographed in Washington on November 22, 1923, this portrait shows Porter H. Dale, a Vermont Republican who had only recently taken his seat in the U.S. Senate. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the capital in the early twentieth century, made many such portraits of officials, and its glass negatives document the public faces of the era. The record's title comes from data the company itself wrote on the negative, so the identification is not independently verified. The negative also shows streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age.
