Few daguerreotypes from the 1840s capture working animals as plainly as this small sixth-plate image, which pairs a yoke of oxen with the men who drove them. Ox teams were a familiar sight on American roads and farms of the period, hauling freight, timber, and farm loads, and oxen were often preferred for heavy pulling. Early daguerreotype exposures lasted long enough that people and animals had to hold still, so the calm, fixed poses are part of what makes the picture notable. The Library of Congress acquired the plate in 2004 and later included it in its 2005 exhibition *American Treasures of the Library of Congress*.
