A cased daguerreotype from around 1850 shows two men posed with their tools, a pairing that tells you as much about the sitters' trades as their faces do. The daguerreotype process, announced in 1839, produced a single mirror-like image on a silvered copper plate, sealed behind glass and kept in a small hinged case, so each portrait was a unique object rather than a print. By 1850 these cased images had become a popular and relatively affordable way for working people to commission a likeness, and portraits that show the tools of a trade are especially valued by researchers today. Look closely at the plate's surface, since its reflective quality changes with the angle of light.
