Two men sit side by side in formal dress, a pairing that was relatively uncommon in early portraiture, since most daguerreotype sitters of 1850 were photographed alone or with family. The daguerreotype process, announced in France in 1839, produced a single, mirror-like image on a silver-coated copper plate, and sitters often had to hold still for several seconds or longer in bright light. Portraits like this one were typically kept in small hinged cases and were prized as keepsakes of friendship, partnership or kinship. Look closely at the tonal range and the crisp detail in the clothing, which show how quickly the medium had matured by mid-century.
