Steuarts Garage is the name the National Photo Company gave this glass negative, though that title is unverified, so the exact location and proprietor remain uncertain. Around 1920, as automobile ownership spread quickly across the country, neighborhood garages like this one served as repair shops, fueling stops and gathering places for drivers. The 8 by 6 inch plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947, and its streaks and blemishes come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, which is worth noticing when studying the image.
