Rather than a battlefield, this picture records a model of the Hindenburg Line, the German fortified defensive system built across northern France in 1916 and 1917 and named for Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg. Relief models like this were often made to explain terrain and trench layouts to officers and the public during the war years. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm that photographed many subjects in the 1910s and 1920s, made the glass negative around 1920. Its surface may show streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating, which can soften some of the model's fine detail.
