The detail that sets this poster apart is its caption, "Monbars cauterizing the wound," which shows the title villain in a grisly moment of stagecraft. The poster advertises Robert Bruce Mantell, a touring actor of the late nineteenth century, in a five-act melodrama. Strobridge Lithographing Company printed it in 1887, and Augustus Pitou, a theatrical manager, held the copyright. Color lithographs like this one were the main way touring companies drew audiences to a town before they arrived, and sensational scenes such as this were a standard selling point.
