Its title sets up a before-and-after comparison, "A year ago and to-day," and the record links the scene to metalworking in the United States and to Civil War campaigns. It ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on April 28, 1866, less than a year after Appomattox, when many shops and foundries that had supplied the war were turning toward peacetime work. *Frank Leslie's* was a popular weekly known for its lively wood engravings, and the pairing of past and present in a single picture would have spoken directly to readers who had lived through the war and were adjusting to its end.
