Thirteen Union generals and officers are named in ink beneath this drawing, which shows them gathered in front of the U.S. Capitol while the building was still under construction during the Civil War. The sheet is a pen-and-wash drawing on tan paper, signed A. Tholey, probably the artist Augustus Tholey, and its title was supplied by cataloguers. The list runs from Winfield Scott, the aging general in chief at the war's start, to younger commanders such as George Custer, making it a useful snapshot of the Union high command. A partly erased note along the right margin about plate dimensions suggests the drawing may have been meant for reproduction.
