Stereo cards let Americans of the early 1900s see public figures in three dimensions, and this one presents Theodore Roosevelt in his role as president. Roosevelt had taken office in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, so a portrait of him from around 1902 would have been popular with viewers. Underwood & Underwood was one of the largest publishers of stereoviews, and its paired photographs, seen through a hand viewer, gave the face a sense of depth. The record is based on old caption data that has not been verified, so the exact sitting date and photographer remain uncertain.
