Eugene V. Debs, who ran for president five times as a Socialist candidate, walked out of the federal penitentiary in Atlanta on Christmas Day 1921, ending more than two years behind bars. He had been sentenced in 1918 under the Espionage Act for an antiwar speech, and his imprisonment made him a rallying point for labor and civil liberties supporters. President Warren G. Harding commuted his sentence shortly before the holiday. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for news and studio photographs of the era, produced the print, which captures the moment of a closely watched release.
