Taken from the air around 1934, this view centers on New York Harbor, where the city's shoreline, piers, and tidal waters meet in one frame. The print came from Fairchild Aerial Surveys, a New York firm that grew out of Sherman Fairchild's work on aerial cameras and that made large mapping and survey photographs during the 1930s. Overhead views like this were valuable then for charting waterfront development and documenting a port that handled much of the country's shipping. The record does not name the specific pier or neighborhood, so the image is best read as a snapshot of the harbor's layout in the Depression years.
