The title "King 8" comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, so the subject itself remains uncertain. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, the Washington, D.C., commercial studio that made many glass plates of city streets, buildings, and people in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its record also notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coatings, a common sign of age in glass plates of this era.
