Booth sits half-length with one arm resting on a table, a pose that helped early daguerreotype sitters hold still through exposures that could run several seconds. A pencilled note inside the case identifies him as "Prof. Jas. C. Booth" and credits the portrait to Mayall, though cataloguers treat that attribution as only a possibility. The small sixth-plate size and the floral scroll on the case were typical of the keepsakes sold in the 1840s, when the daguerreotype was the newest way to own a likeness.
