Jordan Marsh & Co. was one of the best-known department stores in Boston, and this print shows the store itself rather than a street scene or a crowd, which sets it apart from the city views around it on the board. The firm was founded in the 1840s and grew into a landmark on Washington Street, drawing shoppers from across New England with its wide range of dry goods, clothing and household wares. Department stores like this one reshaped American retail in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, turning shopping into a public outing with large plate-glass windows and multi-floor displays. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of the photograph is unknown.
