This tempera poster advertises the Herald Square flagship of Macy's on 34th Street, presenting the store as a towering modern building rather than a simple shop front. In the 1920s Macy's was expanding its Manhattan headquarters, and by the middle of the decade it was widely promoted as the largest department store in the world. The poster reflects that era's faith in the city's skyscrapers and in mass retailing, when stores competed to look as grand as the office towers rising around them. Its lower left corner is missing, so some of the lettering is lost.
