Its title, "Don't Wait for the Draft--Volunteer," sets it apart from the other recruiting images on this board: it asks men to enlist before conscription could force them into service. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and Congress passed the Selective Service Act in May, so the poster reflects a moment when many young men faced a choice between volunteering on their own terms and being called up. The record credits it to Guenther and to the Associated Motion Picture Advertisers, a trade group whose poster series, marked here as No. 3, shows how wartime appeals reached the public through commercial printing.
